Production Differences Between Paving Bricks and Ordinary Blocks

Although the principle of producing paving bricks and hollow blocks is the same, the technical challenges are completely different. The profit margin for paving bricks is typically two to three times that of hollow blocks, but to enter this market, the equipment needs two key capabilities:

The surface layer spreading system determines the color performance of colored paving bricks. Ordinary block machines have only one hopper for producing single‑color products. Paving brick machines require a double‑hopper design – one for the base material (cement, sand and gravel) and another for the surface layer material (with pigments and finer aggregates). During production, the base layer is spread first, followed by the surface layer, and then pressed into shape in a single cycle. The L‑series machines from MASA (Germany) use this process of step‑by‑step filling of base and surface materials, followed by vibration and pressing.

Embossing and texture forming capability determines the final appearance of paving bricks. Imitation stone bricks and imitation wood‑grain bricks require precise textures on the mold surface, which places higher demands on the pressing precision of the equipment and the quality of the mold material.
